Mystery Ride XI will mark the eleventh time that I have put this ride on the schedule and they have all been very successful\, fun\, and totally out of the box for the riders. We will meet at the IHOP at Highway 101 & Main Street for breakfast and after breakfast we will have our pre-ride and depart. This will be a one night stay at our destination.  I may go back to doing two nights at some point but not this year.  Before the ride starts I will ask each rider for $5 if that rider would like to participate in the Destination Game. I will provide a map that each rider will view and select what they think will be the destination for the day of our departure. The rider who guesses the closest will be awarded the pot of $$ for that day. On day two we will return home and we will not play the game.  Dah….that is a no brainer.  LOL   I will use Google maps to calculate distance and route and therefore will not be changing the Google route for mileage purposes. Once you have made your selection you will not be allowed to change it for that day based on our stops along the way en-route to our destination. So start looking at destinations that you might want to guess at before this ride.  The map below may or may not help you…..LOL! \nI will be the only one who knows the destination each day if it is a multi-day ride (not even Jeanie will know) so obviously I will not be participating in this game. I can tell you that I think the destinations and lodging will be to everyone’s pleasing and it should be a fun experience and possibly someplace you have never been or someplace you have not been to in a while…..kind of a crap shoot on that comment! I will come up with scheduled fuel stops/breaks and meal stops along the route to our destination each day as is normally done for overnight rides. \nI will provide those of you who sign-up an approximate cost for the hotel(s) and if you cancel after my cutoff date and I get charged then you will need to reimburse me for the cost of the room you are assigned too.  I will be holding them on my credit card. I will say it again….if you cancel after Friday\, September 18th and I get charged then you will need to reimburse me….so please don’t sign-up if you cannot accept this risk. \nEstimated Cost for this year’s ride: $100+ tax – $155+ tax depending on if you have a King or 2 Queen beds.  Still pretty reasonable. \nWe have previously visited and will not revisit:  Big Bear Lake\, Mammoth Lakes\, Gilroy\, Jackson\, Morgan Hill\, Three Rivers\, Mariposa\, Tehachapi\, Tulare\, Santa Nella\, Wasco\, and Paterson so do not pick one of these.  I do not repeat destinations for the Mystery Ride.  It is someplace different each time. We will all get use to this after a few times of using the new Chevron Station on E. Clark Avenue. \n \nSorry for the primitive map but Google Maps has not caught up with the new facilities located on E. Clark Avenue. \nWhen we depart we will head to the traffic light on E. Clark.  I will wait for it to go green so we can try and keep the group together.  We will turn right at the traffic light and go over the Highway 101 overpass to the next traffic light and get on the northbound on ramp for Highway 101. \nWe will travel for 63.2 miles and exit at the Highway 46 west exit ramp. We will make a right turn and then an immediate left turn and stop at the McChevron (McDonald’s and Chevron) on Ramada Drive. Here we will fuel up\, take a break\, and pick up any north county riders before continuing. \nWe will get back onto Ramada Drive and make a right turn and a right turn to get on Highway 101 north once again. We will travel 11 miles and take Mission Drive into San Miguel. We will travel through San Miguel until we make a right turn at the four-way stop onto 14th Street / N River Road. We will travel over the riverbed and make a left turn onto Cross Canyon Road and then an immediate left turn onto Indian Valley Road. After traveling a short distance\, we will stay to the left at the ‘Y’ split and continue north on Indian Velley Road. We will travel 23.7 miles through the countryside and at Slacks Canyon Road the road name will change to Peach Tree Road\, and we will stay to our left. We will travel another 13.6 miles until we come to Highway 198. Here we will take a short break and take on some fluids before continuing our ride. \nAfter our break we will cross Highway 198 and head north on Highway 25. We will travel 19.1 miles of elevation changes and twisties until we turn left on Bitterwater Road. This will take us into King City after 14.5 miles and we will turn right onto Broadway Street and our destination for lunch will be on the right\, El Lugarcito Mexican Restaurant. (Mileage: 147.8 miles) \nEl Lugarcito Mexican Restaurant \nAfter lunch we will get back on Broadway Street and travel under the Highway 101 overpass and stay to the left and onto Broadway Circle and the Chevron Station where we will take on fuel and say our goodbyes here. From here back to Santa Maria is 109 miles and for those who want to stop at the McChevron Station at Highway 46 west you may do so or continue on. Santa Maria will be the destination / termination point for this ride. We will jog to the right and get into the left turn lane to turn onto S. Thompson Avenue at the left turn arrow signal. We travel north and merge onto US-101 N (5 miles). We will take the Los Osos Valley Road / Exit 200 (18 miles) and turn left. We will travel west through several traffic lights as we head to Turri Road where we will turn right.  At S Bay Boulevard we will turn right and travel a short distance and then turn left onto the northbound on ramp and merge onto CA-1 N.  We will continue our travel to Cambria (27 miles) we turn right onto Windsor Boulevard and left onto Kent Street where the Main Street Grill is located. We will have lunch there. The ride total is 64 miles and will take us about 1 hr and 15 min. \nOctober is when the Scarecrow Festival is held in Cambria. People make whimsical scarecrows and put them out on the street for all to see. There are hundreds of them in Cambria and San Simeon. Some can be seen on Kent Street behind the Shell Gas Station. Clark Avenue.  I will wait for it to go green so we can try and keep the group together.  We will make a right turn and then go over the Highway 101 overpass and make a left at the traffic light and get on the Highway 101 northbound on ramp.  We will stay on Highway 101 traveling through Santa Maria\, Nipomo\, Arroyo Grande\, SLO\, Atascadero\, and take the Highway 46 west off ramp.  We will make a right turn and then a quick left turn and pull into the McChevron (Chevron / McDonalds) for fuel\, a break and pick up any north county riders that I will provide a pre-ride briefing too. \nAfter taking on fuel and a rest break we will head to the traffic light and make a right onto Highway 46 west. We will stay on Highway 46 west until we turn left onto Old Creek Road.  There will be some areas we will have to get into a single file.  Staying on Old Creek Road (watching out for bicyclists) we will come to Highway 1 where we will make a right turn. Once on Highway 1 we will go through Cayucos and stop at the Shell Station on the north side of Cambria to top off our tanks.  Back on the bikes we will head to the traffic light\, make a left then an immediate right back onto Highway 1.  We will stay on Highway 1 to our destination Ragged Point. \nThere are a couple of places to eat whether it be the Restaurant where you can eat inside or out by the fire pit\, or the Hamburger place.  Different times of the year they have an outside Bar-b-q also going. Clark Avenue.  I will wait for the light to change to green and we will make a right turn and head towards the on ramp going South on Highway 101 Freeway. Once on the freeway we will stay until we come to the Highway 154 exit which we will take.  We will make a left turn at the stop sign and we will stay on Highway 154 and head towards Los Olivos.  We will turn right off of Highway 154 onto Ballard Canyon Road and go into single file formation as we travel past several vineyards\, encounter some twisties (stay to the right in your lane) as well as elevation changes.  When we come to the next stop sign we will turn left onto Chalk Hill Road and this turns into Atterdag Road   We will be headed into Solvang the back way and stopping at the traffic light at Highway 246 and we will turn left onto Highway 246 and head east traveling through Santa Ynez and to the Highway 154 roundabout where we will stay to the right and head south.  This will take us towards Santa Barbara. \nWe will then turn left onto Stagecoach Road and we will get into single file formation once again.   We will need to watch for possible wildlife so stay alert.  Coming to a stop sign we will continue on straight across and go under the Highway 154 Bridge and we will travel through Cold Spring Tavern.  We will need to watch for traffic and pedestrians as we pass the restaurant.  Once on top of the hill we will come back to Highway 154 and at the stop sign we will turn right being careful of oncoming traffic to our left.   We will  be going through some nice twists and turns before we take the Cathedral Oaks Road exit on the right.   We will make a right turn at the stop sign and this is a nice piece of road except later there will be 8 traffic lights and 2 stop signs.  At the last stop sign which is close to the freeway we will make a left and head over to the Timbers Restaurant.   Parking should not be a problem but parts of the parking lot are a little rough. Clark Avenue.  I will wait for it to go green so we can try and keep the group together.  We will turn right and get into the left hand turn lane as we pass over the Highway 101 overpass and at the traffic light we will turn left and head north on Highway 101.  We will exit at the Highway 166 exit (9.9 miles) and continue east on 166 to Maricopa (75.9 miles). We will turn left and head north on Highway 33 through Taft and pick up Highway 119 and travel through Ford City\, Valley Acres and Dustin Acres until we come to the junction of Highway 43 (22.8 miles) where we will stop for fuel at the Shell Station and take a break (107 miles from SM Chevron). We will leave the parking lot and go around the roundabout and head north on Highway 43 and stay on Highway 43 until we come to the intersection with Highway 58 (6.1 miles).  We will once again encounter a roundabout and we’ll stay to the right and head east on Highway 58.  We will travel east for 8.9 miles and take the Coffee Road Exit and at the traffic light we will turn left onto Coffee Road.   We will head north for approximately 1.7 miles and our destination will be on the right.  This is a brand new location that Salty’s opened up in August.  So it will be a new location but the same great BBQ!  See the map below.  (Total mileage: 127 miles) \nhttp://saltysbbq.com/ \nSalty’s was featured on the Food Network’s Diners\, Drive-ins and Dives with Guy Fieri a few years back so I have been looking forward to making this trip once again and enjoying some good BBQ….other than my own of course! LOL! Jeff Salters\, the owner\, has several choices of meat to choose from as well as sides. \nAfter lunch we will travel through the parking lot and get onto Downing Avenue and at the traffic light we will turn left and head south on Coffee Road and back to Highway 58 where we will make a right turn at the traffic light.  We will travel 10 miles until we come to Highway 43 at Cladwell Corners where we will turn right at the 4-way stop sign.  We will travel 1.0 mile and we will make a left turn at the 3-way stop sign and head west on Highway 58.  This will take us to McKittrick and we pick up Highway 33 south for a short distance before picking up Highway 58 and head west to Santa Margarita where we will stop at the park (106 miles from Salty’s) for a break and to say our goodbyes.  This will be our termination point for the ride. (This will allow you time to visit other riders\, use the restroom\, fuel up\, get a cup of coffee\, etc.) \nPLEASE BRING YOUR SM HOG MEMBERSHIP CARD FOR CURRENT STATUS![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image source=”featured_image” img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Ride Rating: Moderate\n\nSo\, it is almost Christmas and all of the stress from shopping has you wanting to just get away for a day or so on your Harley….so why not go on a ride?  I am leading a ride to Oakhurst near Yosemite and would like for you to join me!  This is going to be the Polar Bear Ride 9 and we will spend one night of socializing and relaxation before the Christmas Season at the Best Western Plus Yosemite Inn in Oakhurst just outside Yosemite National Park.  This is one of my favorite places to go and for several members this place has created some great memories.  Everyone that has attended my Polar Bear rides have had an absolute BLAST!  So\, let’s make some more great memories this year! \nI have not blocked rooms.  You will need to call and make your own reservation.  You DO NOT need to mention SMHOG as they will not know what you are talking about since I did not block rooms.  If you are not a Best Western Rewards Member then I suggest you join\, it’s free\, and you will get great rates.  You can also make your reservations online and you can look at other .com reservation sources such as Hotels\, Expedia\, Vio\, Booking\, GoSeek\, etc for possibly better rates.  As we know sometimes the actual hotel we stay in does not always have the best rates. \nCall the Best Western Yosemite Gateway Inn at 1-559-683-2378 while rooms are available…..do not hesitate as you can always cancel by 4 pm 24-hours before check-in if something comes up if you get the flexible rate.  I will work on getting us all closer together with our rooms this year.  Look for updates about whether or not I can do this. \nhttps://www.bestwestern.com/en_US/book/hotels-in-oakhurst/best-western-plus-yosemite-gateway-inn/propertyCode.05422.html \n                                                        \n                                                        \nAfter our pre-ride briefing\, we will head north from Santa Maria Harley-Davidson on Highway 101 to Highway 46 west Chevron / McDonalds and pick up north county riders\, take on fuel and take a break (58.6 miles).  After our break we will continue north on Highway 101 for a short distance to Highway 46 east.  We will continue east and turn off on the Highway 41 exit to Fresno and we will make our next stop at the 76 Station in Kettleman City topping off the tanks (57.4 miles).  We will grab a bite to eat here at Carl’s Jr. or Taco Bell across the highway or you can go to a different local fast food place.  But\, when we are ready to go….we are ready to go so keep that in mind.  We are having a quick bite here so we are not eating so late by stopping in Fresno and end up having a late dinner in Oakhurst.  From Kettleman City to our exit off Highway 41 and onto Highway 99 north is 53 miles. \nThis year we will stop at Matthews Harley-Davidson.  When we hit Highway 99 north we will travel 4.1 miles and take Highway 180 / Exit 133 and travel east and take the N. Abby Street / Exit 58 and the cloverleaf ramp and at the bottom of the ramp we will be careful and cross N. Abby Street and into the parking lot of Matthews Harley-Davidson.  We’ll spend about 30 minutes here before we continue the ride.  From the parking lot we will exit onto N. Blackstone Avenue and make a left turn and then another left turn onto E. White Street and at the traffic signal we will take the on ramp to Highway 180E and head east.  We will travel about .5 miles and take Exit 59 that will take us to Highway 41 north.  From here it is 44.6 miles to Oakhurst and our destination the Best Western Plus Yosemite Inn.   We will then be traveling from the plains and we will start getting into some twisties\, elevation changes\, start seeing lots of rocks and a lot more trees as we head through Coursegold and on into Oakhurst and our destination.  We will fuel up at the Chevron Station the morning of our departure.  It is usually during a high traffic period when we arrive into Oakhurst and it is a real pain to get out of the Chevron Station and into the correct lane that takes us to the Best Western so we will wait until the morning we leave to fuel up.  Total mileage: 216 miles \nWe will discuss dinner activities after we settle in\, socialize\, and relax at the pool / hot tub.  Most who have attended the past couple years like to eat at the restaurant on the property while a few like walking a short distance to the Smokehouse 41 BBQ.  Both have pretty good food. \nAfter breakfast on Day 2 we will fuel up at the Chevron Station just down the street from the Best Western and head back south on Highway 41 and head to Lemoore where we make a fuel stop at the Chevron Station in off the Bush Street exit and just before crossing Highway 198.  From here we will get back on Highway 41 and continue to head towards Paso Robles passing through Kettleman City.  We will stop off at the Highway 46 west Chevron / McDonalds for a break\, fuel up\, and say our goodbyes as we head back to the Santa Maria area to terminate the ride. \nNow….I just hope it is cold for the Polar Bear Ride!  If you have any questions\, please let me know and you can contact me at 805.757.9202 \nPhil ‘Rain Man’ Rietz \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Clark Avenue where we will turn right\, go over the overpass to the traffic light and make a left turn and head north on Highway 101.  Once on the Highway we will continue north to the Los Osos Valley Road exit and we will stay in the left lane.  We will make a left turn at the traffic light and stay in that lane through San Luis (5 traffic lights). We will head west towards Los Osos and coming into town we will turn right at the traffic light and head north on S. Bay Boulevard and head to Highway 1.  We will turn left and get on Highway 1 and we will travel through Morro Bay\, Cuyucas\, to Cambria. We will make a right at the first traffic light which is the Main Street exit. Once on Main Street we will travel through town to the Chevron station on the left.  After filling up with fuel and using the facilities we will take a break for roughly 30 minutes or so.  We will get back on Main Street and  we will travel to the traffic light on top of the hill and make a left then an immediate right onto Highway 1 .   We will stay on Highway 1 for the rest of the trip going by San Simeon and Ragged Point.  Some areas will be traveling single file\, and we will encounter some tight curves going up and then down and back up again.  We will go through Gorda and travel another 2 miles where there is a vista point with lots of places to park and we will enjoy our bag lunches.  If that place is too windy then we will travel another 2 miles down the road is the Sand Dollar Picnic ground State Park with picnic tables and 2 out houses. It is protected from the wind and scenic.  There is a $10 dollar user fee.  The return trip will be the same way back.
